It's been a few days since I've managed to get on and actually have the gray matter settled enough to write. At the moment, the master bedroom is all torn up as we are remodeling the 1972 vintage sleeping quarters. For years we've had two really small closets and one us has a plethora of things to wear (we won't mention who ^_^) and we can't mention who has clothes scattered through closets in 3 rooms as a result.

Anyway, we decided to finally tear out the two closets and construct a large-ish volume for several IKEA inserts to fit in to. The ones we chose where going to be about 81 inches wide. That left about 25 extra inches between the closets and the bedroom door. Hmmmmmm...2 feet wide, a little over 2 feet deep, 8 feet high volume. (The lovelyangel might guess the word before I type it here.) Can you say tokonoma?

Albeit, a little on the small side as traditional tokonoma go, but it's a nice location and hopefully a nice touch. The process has involved lots of discussions and pencil sketches on the walls trying to explain to our contractor what I desired to do with this space. Japanese architectural touches are not something he's been used to dealing with. A contractor that we have used in the past (who has long since left the area) enjoyed detail trim work and really dug in to try to understand our desires and counter-proposed many a concept that often ended up being the final choice. This process hasn't quite worked that way, but it hasn't been too bad either.

A few other technical difficulties along the way have been realizing that the closet walls went down on the sub-floor (makes sense once thought about) but now we had funny cut-outs in the hardwood flooring < oops >. We decided to just take all the hardwood out of the closet foot print. One other difficulty was at other end of the closet walls, up top. As he was removing the sheet rock from the closet wall studs, he looks up, leaves the room, climbs up in to the attic and sees that the headers running across the top of the closet doors were weight bearing. OOPS Anyway, details aside, we've managed to rectify the problem (I hope) and we're moving along.

Along with all this, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous (by Virginia standards that is, not Oregon standards :P ) and so I've managed to get out for a skate just about every evening the last two weeks. I've even started to gathering a following. A neighbor's young daughter saw me out yesterday and promptly got mom to help find her pads and skates and came out for a joint skate. She's maybe 7 and skinny as a rail, so it was hard making sure the pads were snug enough as there wasn't much to snug up against. She had a cute pair of 3-wheel in-line skates and made a great go of things. A young boy 3 houses over ran in and got his "wheels-in-sneakers" on and kind of shuffled about. The street was just a little bit on the rough side for those "skates" though. It was quite fun.

Well, I need to get back to what I'm being paid for. minasan, jya mata
