Time to head out to the track...

Well...the race is over...everyone is packed up and ready to head back home--though since my train doesn't leave until tomorrow afternoon, I have another day to hang around.

Today started out a *little* cool, but as soon as the sun came up the mid-40's quickly crept in to the 50's and by race start was in the mid to high 50's. The sky was *clear* blue (unfortunately I didn't put on enough sunscreen in the *right* places. ~_~;; ) and the winds were calm though it picked up a bit later in the race.

Nothing like the 25-gusting-to-35 stuff yesterday's time trial skaters saw, but enough to knock you back right when the fatigue was beginning to creep in.

I think this was my personal best time for a 1/2 marathon--51m57s. MAYbe if I had kept that pace line up a little bit longer I *might* have been able to break the 50 min. mark but...ahwell...it seemed good enough to come in 9th overall (pretty small field here though), 3rd overall female.

I'll spare people the snapshots...blood is always kind of messy...

I think the next few days are going to be a little on the achy side. I guess I'm not sure if it was a pebble or just nicking my back wheel with my other skate, but the spill on the last corner of lap 9 kind of took the wind out of me for a few minutes. Fortunately the wrist guards took a lot of the slide across the pavement, but the hip and elbow still did their parts of taking one for the gipper.

Road rash can *generally* be recovered from...'just takes a few days. sigh...

I just started a formal fitness program with a DC skate club this past week. It's an interesting change for me as almost all of my skating to date has been solo, but I'm enjoying it as I'm finally getting to know some other skaters...even if I do have to drive 2 1/2 hours to get to the practices. ~_~;

This past Sunday was the kick-off with a fairly laid back skate (only 12 miles I think ) so the head coach could familiarize herself with all of this session's participants. I think there were about 20 skaters there...easily 15 of which I could *never* keep up with. < sigh >

Another very humbling moment that occurred during this session was during a hill climb. The coach was giving tips on how to tackle things and as we neared the peak she asked what was my heart rate at that moment. My watch said around 172, which I pretty much consider my training maximum. She looked down at hers and it read 137. >_<;;;;;

Boy do I have a loooooong ways to go!

Cute...the skate training session files on my GPS tracking watch are XML documents. < totally naive question > I wonder how much hassle it would be to write a program to read those files and do a better job of plotting up the data than the freeware included with the product? < / totally naive question >

Ahwell...it is interesting poking around the file itself...it's great to have [ human ] readable data.

Along much more trivial of topics, I passed my first training goal for my full marathon skate--26 miles in under 2 hours. I definitely need some coaching on technique! The final few miles got to be a bit of a struggle with sore ankles and knees.

Another personal training goal is to get my 1/2 marathon skating time below 50 minutes. I've plateaued at 52 to 53 minutes and haven't been able to break through for a while now. I think part of it is losing concentration as I skate solo most of the time. It does make a difference having a training buddy. Be that as it may...it's nice to have goals like these at all!
