Icons...avatars...are they who people are? Or do people become their avatar..

Actually one of the first times I came across that term was watching Star Blazers many many many years ago. I taped almost every one of those episodes off the air. Yah...that VHS stuff....tape.

Captain Avatar...funny...something was strangely engaging about that anime.

At the time...I didn't even know it was...anime.

Maybe it was being just bored with...domestic animation at the time. But...I made sure I got home from work in time to catch the next episode...ah...those were the days.

front of a CRT. *has* been quite a while since I've actually worked on a life has been mostly in front of flat panels...for many days of the week...for many hours of the work and at home...

Life away from the flat panel has been an ALmost finished single speed/fixie bike and a in-line skate race in 2 weeks that I have not had *any* time to train for...see above...oh and the weather. Bleh...

Katsu was fun...did I already say that?

goneroundthebend: (KashiMashi) did the anime and manga depart ways. I guess there was a radio series as well...and I did catch an episode or two over the internet...but without subtitles understanding was lacking for but *so* much of the story.

So...I don't know. Should the manga and anime track exactly or should they be allowed to...tell different stories??

I think the story line for the Kashimashi manga was more thought provoking...but...

Work on the '70's department store bike progresses well. The bearings and races in the fork have been replaced as have the bearings in the bottom bracket. Next will be deciding on the restoration of the brakes and fenders where the decision is exactly what to fix and what the replace. The rust and pitting is very heavy on all the iron/chrome parts so path 1 would be complete replacement with new parts ( conditional on finding something that actually fits ) or path 2 taking out as much rust as is reasonable and coating with a rust sealer.

Though to the chemists out there, it really isn't a sealant as much as a bonding agent with the iron oxide. The package says it will turn the coated part black. Since the parts I am considering coating were previously *chrome* plated, that's a bit of a color shift.

Along a tangential line of thought, I'm slowly getting through Kashimashi...anime DVD 2 currently. It's certainly fanciful and tries to deal with some curious trans-like social interactions, but I still can't say it rises to the level of story of say...KareKano or Haruhi. any old bikes out there that need work??? ^_^

AUSA recap

Well...just a mini-quickie-recap.

Setup and teardown went amazingly well. What got a little rocky was the in-between. PeeLander Z was actually quite fun to help set up and tear down...Versailles was a totally different matter. We won't go in to details here, but I actually left after the expected 2 hour sound check was going on hour 4 with no end in can google the web for other details.

I got to say "hi" at AppleGeeks...and stopped by a favorite artist in the Alley to chat. There were a good number of vendors in place this time, but I had to apply *some* constraint walking through those bountiful aisles!

I did have the most fantastic gopher this time as well. Sonya! She's cool...and I'd like her to come back next year!

Anime USA is this weekend!! I'm on staff again working at Main Events. Let's see how *this* year goes.

Along OTHER lines, I was looking at air fares for Japan this winter. $3200??? For coach no less?!?! wow...

Phew...another set of fascinating

Ah was quite some time. Four days of 18 hours work-6 hours sleep, but it was pretty much worth it.

Main Events hosted the bands, the music videos and the dances at the con. This year's entries in the AMVs were pretty impressive. Some of the videos definitely reminded me that I watch but a limited cross-section of what's out there. Ahwell...I do have other things I do in the evenings I guess.

I managed the backstage for both Echostream and Eyeshine this year. Both bands were great and great to work with. Alright, I admit I was tempted to keep the "Tomo" pick that landed on stage after the show but one of the fans up front noticed it and asked for it. Ah...she'd enjoy it more than I would anyway.

Setup and breakdown actually went quite well, not that I didn't feel things in the joints and muscles the next day. And at the staff party Sunday night I got to sit down with Phil and Kaja Foglio and have a great chat about Life and the Universe...we didn't have enough time to get to Everything.

I remember Phil's work from back in the late 70's/early 80' sex...even back then. Those of you that know his work, know what I'm talking about. ~_^
goneroundthebend: (Default) least I think it's Katsu *14* this year. I'm actually on staff this year, so it will be interesting to see how different things are or are not...compared to last year as a gopher.

The DC area saw quite a bit of ice yesterday, but the highs in the 40's for the next few days should clear out most of the issues from before...except for all the tree debris...and power lines down. So hopefully that hasn't dampened things too much for the weekend.

ANYway, with the con starting on Friday, Thursday day and night will be spent setting up the main events hall. The logistics at Katsu are thankfully a lot better than how things were at the previous con at the previous hotel. That place was just not set up at all for off-loading gear at the dock and easily moving it to the main hall. This place?'s going to be 4 looong days...and nights...

Let's see if I don't end up resurfacing until some time Monday. ~_~;;
goneroundthebend: (Mushishi) just gets more intense each episode. I'm not sure I care to wander an Uro-passageway even *with* a more-than-vise grip on that chain.
goneroundthebend: (KashiMashi)
Ah...if were so *easy*...sigh... ^_^
goneroundthebend: (piroko)
A day or two late...but it took quite a few days just to recover between little sleep, metal splinters in the hands, sore feet and just general exhaustion experienced working the con. phew... was a rather interesting change in pace to stage manage the main events hall for those 3 days. I got to meet Kristine Sa, the members of Back-On and their translator Mari who is based out of NYC. They somehow tolerated my abysmal Japanese as I worked on setting up the stage for their show. ^_^

I admit to not always remembering bands and what they place, but I made at least one connection when I heard the theme to Air Gear. that's who does that opening theme! And just to add to the whole theme of things, they had a cosplayer as Simca of the Swallow dancing with the band.

Anyway, there were lots of temptations back in the vendors area but I managed to walk away empty handed...I had spent enough already. I did reconnect with a few other artists I had seen at Katsucon earlier this year--one person of which runs the Artist Alley at Sakuracon. It's amazing she makes the trek all the way from the left coast just for these cons.

I only found Hawk and Ananth that one time on the first day...ahwell...there's always next time.
goneroundthebend: (piroko)
Another Cliff's Notes Entry - Started 10PM Thursday night setting up Main Events, crashed 5AM, back up 9AM, more setup in Main Events, finished just in time for 2:30PM opening ceremony, chance to tour Artist Alley (picked up autographed poster from Hawk and Ananth), got lost wandering around the vendors area, quick dinner, then back stage for Christine Sa concert, finally crashing 10PM Friday.
goneroundthebend: (piroko)
The next few days will be interesting as I decided to try being on staff at an anime convention. Earlier this year I volunteered at Katsucon and, though I could only work 1 1/2 days of the 3 day con, rather much enjoyed it.

So...let's see if working on the staff I can maybe be part of making AnimeUSA a fun experience. ^_^
goneroundthebend: (Mushishi)
Wow...I still can't believe it...

The most recent RightStuf delivery placed the Air Gear #1 DVD on the doorstep today. I stumbled upon the manga from an Akadot e-mail advertising the Simca statuette (a little pricey I think). So I decided to try at least the first DVD after having read the first 2 volumes. I don't think I really get along with the more extreme aspects of the story so far, but I will give it a few more episodes to see if the bigger picture is worth it.

The story telling just doesn't seem to have much depth yet...skates aside... ~_~
